What we love most about the work at sisterMAG: when we get eMails, comments or tweets from you full of your thoughts, ideas and opinions about sisterMAG. This time I especially loved a comment by contributor Clara, who had written: “I am absolutely in love with your section pages and the page with Barbie-shoes inside the type case – Screech!!!”. In order for Clara to be able to look at these shoes every day when starting her computer, we prepared all section pages as wallpaper download! Simply click on the right resolution and download all 6 images as .zip.

How did we come up with the idea? In the beginning there was the theme of the issue “Insights, views and vistas” and our cover dress made of thousand small mirror tiles. I therefore decided to use this idea of squared tiles inside our issue for product collages etc. You can see some of them on the first pages inside the wintergarden (e.g. p. 10-15). A lucky coincidence then let me find Ilana Freddye’s summer salad via Pinterest (on her blog you can also find the recipe).

The notion to use the theme of “mosaics” also as section pages got stuck in my head. Together with Evi all the other ideas for six sections formed themselves on a sunny Sunday. We ran through the whole house, always searching for some weird things we hadn’t looked at for ages: barbie shoes in our attic, wooden frames in the workshop, vintage spools or old slides. We had flowery ice cubes all waiting for us to quickly take pictures of them and watermelon ready to be cut in squares.

Behind the Scenes: Cover N°3

The idea
The cover dress again was made in close negotiation with our sisterMAG-mom Evi. Ideas flew back and forth. During the conception phase we even wanted to make a dress out of glasses (probably from IkEA). But then I stumbled over Julie Richey on Pinterest and her sculpture “La Corrente”, made from marble, glass smalti and seashells.

Behind the Scenes: Cover N°3

Pictures via Trendland

She produced this piece for the 2011 Mosaic Arts International, an annual international juried exhibition of contemporary mosaic art. I was thrilled, enthusiastic but also uncertain: would we be able to do such a piece for our cover? We decided: yes, that must be possible!

Making of the dress
From Mixed Store we then ordered over 4 kg of mirror mosaic stones (1x1cm) as well as so-called Bycantic Stones in different blue and green shades. The dress itself was sewn out of terribly sturdy fabric, which must have caused a lot of cursing at the sewing machine. The silhouette was created through this fabric but also by putting a ring shaped pillow around the model’s hips underneath the dress.

Coming from the cocktail shooting in Berlin I was only home for merely 4 days and we HAD to finish the dress in this time. Without further ado we started gluing the little pieces! We ended up gluing over 4000 stones with uncountable sticks of hot glue onto the dress. We only ever were interrupted by half-sceptical questions from my father, who asked unsettingly: “Do you think you’ll finish?” – “I am not sure, but will the stones hold up?” ;). To our own amazement only a few stones fell off when moving it around!

As you know: you should never force someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. Thus I tried on our cover dress myself and let me tell you: it was incredibly heavy, felt a little bit like an armour plate and I really did not envy Anke!

Protagonists – model, photographer, stylist etc.
That leads us to our protagonists of the garden shooting on 30th June when the cover was created.

Cover-Shooting sisterMAG N°3

A first big Thanks goes to Anke who was a perfect model and even left alone her little daughter and family to stand around in a 4 kg heavy dress in our garden :). Just as our motto goes to show “real people” we want to quickly tell you that Anke in ‘real life” works as a surgeon and can handle a horrendous family van even in a little parking spot (I witnessed this myself ;)!

As photographer we were able to get the talented Cris Santos. Maybe you can remember our contributor profile from January 2012 (click here to read that post). If you wonder how these two stories fit together since we told you that he is a Canadian photographer: Well, Cris decided (almost over night) to pack up his stuff and move to Berlin for a whole year. There he does not only assist artists, studies German and learns a lot about German folk festivals but is incredibly (and unselfishly) helps us with sisterMAG. That is why you do not only find one, two, no three shootings in the current sisterMAG where he was our photographer!

Sometimes a job stays in town. That was the case with our stylist responsible for hair and makeup. Christine Donath has a hair salon in my hometown (and by the way: she is responsible for my dad’s hair! ;)

The setting
It promised to be a wonderful day when we looked out the windows on this Saturday in late June. We however did not expect the two rain showers which drenched our fabric backdrop almost entirely during the day. In the shadow zone of our backyard we set up our little photo studio becaus sunlight still is the best when thinking about an outdoorsy summer issue. And as soon as Anke stepped outside, many thousands of light points were dancing on the ground. In the end the stylist – wearing red trousers – even had to hide in a corner of the garden because otherwise we would have had a red cover dress! In conclusion: a crazy dress and a crazy day! Thanks to Cris, Anke didn’t have to sweat too long in the sun, because he shoots fast and well!

Retrospect and foresight: Chiffon cloud travelling with Stefanel blazer

sisterMAG Coffee Date Outfit

Before we start to take a few looks behind the scenes of the development of sisterMAG N°3, we’ve prepared something very special for you (you might say: we’ve never done that before ;). We already want to show you two pieces of our new fashion editorial for the September issue of sisterMAG which were kindly given to us by Italian fashion label Stefanel.

And we thought we’ll show you how to put the new and the old together: I combined one of my favourite piece of the current issue – the chiffon cloud (from page 186) in Yellow – with the two pieces for a little travel to Leipzig. When looking at the uncertain weather conditions of last week, the new fall piece was the right piece to go with: a very comfy but at the same time chic jersey blazer with leather details on the neckline and pockets from Stefanel.

The second piece is a clutch, lined with a clashing pink fabric – in beige tones. Even I sometimes limit myself to an iPad and a wallet when meeting authors or photographers for a coffee – these things fit perfectly into the little, stylish bag!

So, for you to style: the sisterMAG-coffee-date-outfit from Thea:

Tutorial for summer skirts

Perhaps some of you have had a look into their fabric box or went to the fabric store in order to find the perfect chiffon to make one of our skirts. Or maybe you have a box full of fabric scraps, then you may want to try a patchwork skirt?

The tutorial for our basic pattern as well as all variations you’ll find as PDF to download or below to read.

Tutorial Summer Skirts sisterMAG N°3

  1. Download pattern, cut out the desired size (36-40 on the pattern) and put pattern on fabric. Specify desired length (see separate instructions for all five skirts for our lengths).
  2. Cut out front and back part. For seam allowance, leave 4 cm at the hem, 2 cm on the sides and 1 cm on all other edges. Draw in location of the pleats, fold them and pin them down.
  3. Sew side seams of the skirt panels, leave open the pocket opening. Sew in pockets.
  4. Stitch back center from the zipper mark to the hem. Sew in zipper.
Of course you can also sew in the zipper into the side seam, then you can cut the back pattern in the fold. In this case sew in zipper in the left side seam, leaving out one of the side pockets. Inexperienced crafters may leave the side pockets away after all.
  5. The waistband is cut in this way: waist, 2 cm seam allowance, adding convenience 2 cm, 3 cm underlap (eg 70 +2 +2 +3 = 77cm)
The width of the waistband depends on your own taste and current fashion. Standard size is 3.5 cm.
  6. You cut the waistband 9 cm wide, iron in collar 9 to cm wide. Press fusible interfacing at the wrong side of the fabric and tack it to the wrong side of the upper edge of your skirt. You now notice whether you have to change around the pleats. If everything fits together neatly, tack the pleats (so they won‘t slide around when sewing the waistband). Do not forget: the underlay needs to remain overlapping, we‘ll sew on the button on this overlapping piece later on.
  7. Sew waistband wrong side on wrong side on the top part of your skirt, iron it along the seam, fold seam allowance inside and sew on.
  8. Put in button holes and sew on button.
  9. Fold and iron hem, sew on by hand (so the seam is invisible).

Tutorials for all variations you can find in the PDF.
We are so excited to see what you come up with! We have therefore founded a Pinterest Board where we will save your creations. We’ll share your creations on FB, Pinterest and our blog!
Many greetings from Evi & Thea

The week after … the new sisterMAG is online!

The day after … sisterMAG 3 is published

We are relieved, we are happy, but we are also a little bit exhausted (in a good way ;)!! The new sisterMAG Summer issue was published this weekend. The English issue took a little longer and we even did an update on Sunday (hopefully no one noticed ;) to give you an issue without major flaws.

Of course we cannot wait to hear your feedback! We’ve already spotted some blogposts in the last hours and will have a look at all of them! So please do comment below if you’ve written about the new issue, so we can pay a visit. What are your favourite pages? For which feature would you like to know the Behind-the-scenes?

You are free to use screenshots and if you want to EMBED our issue and show your readers your favourite page you can do that really really easily. I’ve prepared a document/tutorial (on page 2 for WordPress) for you, explaining the embedding process step-by-step. You can even embed the magazine open on the page you like the best!! (Link to magazine on issuu.com)

What was the day “after” like for us? I took a day off from the computer and the internet world and went to Berlin for a very quick visit. What we were doing? Preparing the next shooting for sisterMAG 4 by collecting some fashion pieces :). Plus: brainstorming for the next two issues. HOWEVER first you should enjoy this one and there is so much to explore!

Looking forward to reading your feedback!
Yours, Thea (and Toni)

P.S. We hope to have the new iPad version ready for you on Friday. Keep you posted!
