Concorde Colours Blogger Event

Concorde Colours Event in Berlin

Don’t you love a party with a really good motto? sisterMAG was lucky enough to be invited to such one in West Berlin last week Thursday.

Concorde Colours Event in Berlin

The Concorde Hotel in Augsburger Straße asked Berlin bloggers to come and celebrate their newly founded blog (blog-concorde-berlin.com). The focus of their blog is supposed to be culinary, lifestyle and Berlin West.

An event truly organized to value the guests and their love for food, colours and information. We all went through different stations beginning from a little gettogether in the front of the hotel, then the architect of the hotel (Jan Kleihues) explained the specialties and features of the building (one of my favourite parts).

Afterwards we went through the kitchen inside the building and were greeted by a tropically decorated hallway cheese tasting. Three more suites were to see (my favourite one for sure the “Suite blanche” where really everything was held in different white tones) until we finally ended up in a large hotel suite where there was not only delicious chocolate cake but also a DJ ;).

The bloggers were invited to tweet, post and take pictures as much as they could and in the end the hotel chose the best one. I love their decision because I was so lucky to meet Rebecca (from Field Office) and Anthony (photographer – see Anthony’s site here). Cannot wait to meet up again with you!

The evening became truly special through all the people I met again or got to know. Rebecca and Anthony only two of them, I was also lucky enough to share a ride (yes, we actually got picked up!!) with Sandy (Sandy in Berlin) and Hannah (Berlin behind the scenes), I met James from Überlin again and also finally met his other half Zoe (uberlin.co.uk).

And then there are all the new and wonderful blogs and sites you find through such an event, which you have stumbled across before but now you’ll definitely come back more often: FindingBerlin, The Styleograph or one of the bloggers for the new blog: Nicole Is The New Black.
Last but certainly not least I was just so happy to have Ashley and Andreas there from Chasing Heartbeats.

Ashley and I spent a good deal of time just talking, judging the food and giggling, but it made this evening so special. Now we can’t wait to go to Concorde for breakfast tomorrow morning! Talking about the next shooting, which will take place on Saturday for sisterMAG. What better atmosphere to work and talk and eat ;). You can spot us, we are the girls with the big glasses!

A special thanks goes of course to the crew of Concorde Berlin, who were really great! Thanks, #concordecolours (with a “u” and I like that ;)

“Meet The Blogger” – Amsterdam June 2012

Meet The Blogger 2012 in Amsterdam

“One image or one tweet from a blogger can lighten up a bad day”

This statement by the founders of Meet the Blogger summerizes the motto of the conference perfectly. The group of blogger which came together on this rainy and grey day in Amsterdam are definitely lightening up the days of many readers.

The blogger itself brought some colour to the day. The room filled with a bunch of colourful bloggers – all dressed up like going to a party. We registered some great outfits ;-)

Monetization was – as it is at any blogger gathering at the moment – the overruling topic. You could speak of the awakening of the European blogger scene as stakeholders in the media and advertising world. But don’t assume there is unity in opinions. Far from it! There are huge differences in opinions and positions as became clear from the key note and the subsequent panel discussion.

“@@Frida_Ramstedt built a whole successful career around her blog Trendenser”

The atmosphere was filled with excitement when Frida Ramstedt from Trendenser.se finally entered the stage. Her blog is the hugely sucessful and has given her the opportunity not only to monetize the blog itself with advertising but also to venture in other fields like TV presentation or her own iPad magazine.

Meet The Blogger 2012 in Amsterdam

Her key point was that business on blogs is more than banners. A blog can be the starting point for book deals, freelance work for magazines, TV, radio, production of web content or advertorials. Blogger can also consult companies with their expertise, hold speeches or create (e-)courses.

“Success is not defined, but depends on what you want to achieve”

The three other bloggers in the subsequent panel discussion made it clear that they have different objectives with their blog. For Pippa Jameson, a UK stylist, the blog is more of a business card, showcasting her work and initiating more styling work. Yvonne from the highly acclaimed Dutch blog yvestown abstained from earning money for a long time, and even now only accepts carefully selected sponsors which fit her style.

Even though opinions vary considerably, it became clear that the scene is awakening and that blogs offer a way to make a living from in the future.

“Interesting to hear how Flexa finds the new trend colours”

The next presentation was by one of the conference sponsors, Flexa Colour. In contrast to expectations it was a very interesting speech as the company follows a very creative route in developing their upcoming colours. They run a ColourLab, a kind of trend searching laboratory, which finds and condenses current and upcoming social trends.

Ideas included the living scrapbook as mean to be creative, Facebook as portfolio showcasting who you are or the internet movement and the following exhibitionism as reason why people want to show more of their homes.

“Up next on #meettheblogger are the workshops about blog styling, photography, product design”

The last two sessions were workshops about Blog Styling by Pippa Jameson and Product Photography by yvestown. Both speakers brought up some interesting insight into improving your blog itself and the photography:

  • Search for junior photographers to help you, it’s good advertising for them
  • Plan forward to have enough time for followers to re-produce the post
  • “How to”-guides drive traffic
  • Engage in chat forums like http://yahoo.com, also brings up your Google ranking

The sessions were less practical workshops, the two bloggers rather talked about their best practise and demonstrated their workflows.
Find the crazy pieces in the portfolio of a potential sponsor and make them your own

“Goal of “Up next on #meettheblogger are the workshops about blog styling, photography, product design” is inspiration and education”

We met some old friends again like Deepa from Currystrumpet and Anki from Zilverblau, got to know new friends like I love Eco or Love Johnny. It was also great to see the people from vtwonen again. Unfortunately, the socializing time was too short to speak with all the people we wanted to meet.

Meet The Blogger 2012 in Amsterdam

Whereas I (Toni) was listening to the speech of Yvonne, Thea took her camera and strolled with two other bloggers and a hotel manager through the beautiful venue of our conference: The Conversatorium Hotel. The building used to be a bank, then it was Amsterdam’s conservatorium. The architect succeeded in maintaining many of the old details, it is very elegant and modern at the same time. But have a look yourself:

Meet The Blogger 2012 in Amsterdam

At the end we left exhausted but inspired the gorgeous Conversatorium Hotel and look forward to our next Blogger conference. We also want to thank Liselore & Janneke for organizing this lovely event. They succeeded in getting great (!) sponsors, which made the goodie bag one of the best ones we ever got: the newest issue of VT Wonen, a notebook from Loods 5, an apron from Quooker, the newest trend issue from Flexa (we loved it! Will show you more of this in the future) and salt and pepper shaker from Brabantia. And since we almost feel bad about getting all this lovely stuff, we’ll add the newest issue of VT Wonen to our giveaway basket! So don’t forget to answer the second question here

Yours, Thea & Toni

sisterMAG at DMY Berlin

With sisterMAG at the DMY Berlin 2012

DMY Berlin is an international design network for contemporary product design. For a few days (Thursday – Sunday) this platform did not only hold an exhibition at one of Berlin’s well-known historical spaces – the airport Berlin Tempelhof – but also organized different events throughout the town.

sisterMAG went to see the newest trends in furniture and product design. Luckily we had the expert with us on this sunny and warm day since we met up with Chrissi who works as category manager Living for dawanda. With her we wandered over the 20.000 sqm of exhibition space.

These huge halls of the old airport were perfect for exhibiting furniture, hand-knitted rugs, lamps or home accessories. While on the one hand many products were absolutely clean and minimalistic, another trend to see was opulent textures and structures, as it could be seen with smoked chair covers from Hans Sapperlot.

Wood Trends from DMY

Right in the middle of the main hall there was a little wooden fence with a long table inside. Four designers (Agentur Montag) were cooking for guests. You could just pay at the front, sit down and eat as much as you wanted of their mashed potatoes, carrots and broccoli. They told me afterwards that the whole ensemble was handmade out of old wood, thrifted cutlery and as lamps they only used the bare metal of a lampshade. Definitely one of my favourite ideas from DMY.

Other than that the mood and atmosphere was really very relaxed and friendly. You could have a look at each exhibited piece without rushing but the designers seemed to happily enjoy conversations with interested people.

What design trends have you found to be really compelling in the last months? I really like the movement towards copper which is such a wonderful colour. Furthermore the dominance of wood – especially when combined with pastel colours – is evident and I love it! In the department of vases and home decor I really like the trend to very clean and geometric vases …

It was also an exhibition of large contrasts. Tiny little gardens by a Dutch design studio (ontwerpduo) on the one hand. The largest “smoking” technique I’ve ever seen on the other hand made by Hans Sapperlot!

And in the end Toni got little grumpy. Thus it was high time for a little sugar. Luckily there was a great organic snack bar in the middle of the hangar. Full of pots with basil, rustic bread sandwiches and ice cream. What a day ;)
Have a lovely day and looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Yours, Thea

Themed days: Living Room Week

There is nothing better than sitting in a lovely environment to work and blog. Some of you may have an office, some do the blogging sitting on the couch, some might use the living room for food photography and maniacally typing on the computer. This is why the workspace/living room is such an important room for us in the sisterMAG appartment. Mainly because living and working has very much merged into one thing ;).

This week we have prepared another question for you concerning the living room/office of the latest issue. Do you know the solution?

sisterMAGgiveaway-solutionkey-2

What else have we prepared for you this week? There will be a music suggestion every day on Twitter (follow @sister_mag and look out for the hashtag #nowplaying). We’ll take you to the DMY Berlin, which took place last weekend and where we spend an afternoon with the lovely category manager for furniture – Chrissi, there will be a Behind-the-Scenes of Thea’s workspace in Saxony and of course we’ll tell you all about the Meet-The-Blogger event in Amsterdam last weekend, where we met a lot of interior and design bloggers.

So tell us: which room are you sitting in when blogging, writing and brainstorming?

Yours, Thea
